I thought it was time I shared a few photo’s of the Artist in Residence studio here at Fiskars – in the basement of the apartment.  It is sparsely appointed, but I’ve got it looking productively messy, and the school’s etching press that happens to be being stored in the back room at the moment is getting a workout.  Finally a look back out the door and down the hill, past the SIWA (small grocery store) and to the new carpark.  From my desk I can watch the constant too-ing and fro-ing of locals going to SIWA, and the tourists and visitors crossing the market from their cars to the craft shops and galleries.  For a town with 600 residents it manages to feel quite busy.

Ink on paper, Peter McLean, 2012

 

I’ve taken to drawing with ink and a skewer over the last week (no real reason, except the previous artist left some drawing ink behind, and the first likely implement that came to hand was some bamboo skewers in the kitchen drawers, this being the way artistic choices sometimes get made).  I loved the fluidity of this scene, where the undulating land, patches of forest and irregularly shaped cultivated fields intersect.

I’ve been meaning for some time now to add in some more links to other artists.  Well today I received a comment from Albertus Gorman, otherwise known as artist at exit 0.  His wordpress blog has had me chortling away – I just want to see more and more.  But I made myself stop rushing through the old posts, I want to slow down and consider them more carefully when I have more time (I’m supposed to be preparing a seminar for tomorrow).  Among other things, he makes sculptural figures and wildlife from the flotsam deposited on the banks of the Ohio River.  And what an interesting River it seems to be!    The stories that go with these whimsical creatures are great too.  If you have a look at his site I guarantee you wont be disappointed.
