the eye

eye

I came across this delightful feature in a small creek in Royal National Park recently, just upstream from my camp.  Royal is on the outskirts of Sydney and is Australias oldest, and the worlds second oldest National Park.  With that deliciously dark hole, it will definitely be making an appearance in some prints sometime soon.  I’ve been thinking of it as The Eye.

What a cool feature! Is this pinkish sandstone?

Well spotted Al – almost all of Sydney and the regions surrounding it are primarily sandstone, and I guess it often is pinkish, though plenty of yellows and oranges too. That’s why Sydney has so much bushland and National Park nearby – because much of the land wasn’t really much good for farming. The dust to be found under rock overhangs makes for great ‘painting’ pigment.
